Abstract:		 The Ivay Subsidy rolls, preserved in a long series at the Record Office in London, are so called because they represent taxation on lands and goods levied upon lay persons apart from the nobility, clerics and certain other privileged parties. They are Rolls, because the particulars, written on narrow slips of parchment fastened end to end, are usually wound up in roll form.
