Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
While the existence of vineyards in medieval England has long been recognised, evidence concerning their management and the production and consumption of their wine has hitherto been sparse. This article charts the history of the bishop of Winchester’s vineyard at Esher in Surrey during the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Although this vineyard was comparatively short lived, the accounts covering its establishment and productive phase, recorded in the Winchester Pipe Rolls, are detailed and informative. The article considers the creation of the vineyard, the production and consumption of its wine and verjuice, and the wider significance of viticulture at Esher. | ||||||
