Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Investigations on land north of Grange Road, Tongham revealed field systems and settlement evidence dating to the Late Bronze Age. Close to several areas of Iron Age settlement this completes a chronological gap in the landscape history of the area. Settlement evidence included both enclosed settlement and apparently shifting open settlement within an agricultural landscape. The area later attracted Romano-British funerary activity with several cremation deposits and an inhumation burial dated to the Late Roman period. Examination of the cremation deposits suggests that three were in-situ single-use cremation pyres that involved probable beds or couches, while the other two were deposits of pyre debris resulting from a ritual marked by the inclusion of hobnailed footwear. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
