Abstract:
During a study of Mesolithic flintwork in the Museum of Farnham, the newly-added collection by R G V Venables was also examined, together with its accompanying documents. The Venables collection includes a number of microliths, mostly from around Frensham, which had been described in papers published by W F Rankine in the 1940s, but have not been studied in detail since. The subject microliths have a unique curved shape and appear to be found almost exclusively in the local area. They had been dismissed as being forgeries, a view that persisted for several decades, so the main aim of the work described here was to tackle the problem of their authenticity, both of antiquity and location.
