Abstract:
Palynological analyses and a scheme of radiocarbon dating from Point Pleasant, Wandsworth have yielded important dated pollen sequences which between them cover most of the Mesolithic and, following a hiatus, the Early Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age to the post-medieval periods. Particularly important are sequences that illuminate our understanding of the earliest Holocene (Flandrian 1a-1c), and the account of intensifying agriculture in the early medieval period. The dataset details a mostly complete record of the changing Holocene landscape of Wandsworth and locates an early Holocene outlet of the river Wandle prior to its migration. The project highlights the importance of geoarchaeological studies through intersections with known archaeology and provides a rare opportunity to study palaeoecology in south-west London over many thousands of years.
