Abstract:
Archaeological investigations carried out by Wessex Archaeology at Matthew Arnold School, Staines-upon-Thames, partially coincided with the much-explored double-ditched trapezoid enclosure known as ‘Caesar’s Camp’, first recorded by the 18th century antiquarian William Stukeley and now a Scheduled Monument. The results compare well with earlier excavations at the school and support previous indications of a medieval date for this enigmatic feature. In addition, small-scale evidence for Late Bronze Age settlement was revealed, comprising a ditched enclosure and a scatter of pits and postholes alongside associated artefactual and environmental evidence. This is also comparable to previous work undertaken within the school grounds – during which significant quantities of prehistoric pottery and worked flint have been recovered – and is consistent with wider land-use patterns along river terrace gravels in this region.
