Abstract:		 The `Introduction' by Sarah Whiteley (3--4) reviews general activities and organisational changes during the two years covered by this double edition. `Archaeology in the planning process, 1996--1998' by Sarah Whiteley (5--8) reports restructuring of SYAS, industrial archaeology and building recording. `The Sites and Monuments Record, 1996--1998' by Jim McNeil (9--13) covers the introduction of new software (including GIS) and a new monument/event/source data model, then moves on to discuss the results of the MARS survey. The bulk of the report comprises forty-six summaries of the results of desk-based assessments and fieldwork projects undertaken by various contractors during the period 1996--98. The review concludes with reports on the South Yorkshire Archaeology Days held in 1996 and 1997 respectively and on the work of the South Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Panel. Lists of members of the Advisory Panel, Joint Committee and staff are provided.
