Abstract: |
Through the application and refinement of textural analysis of thin-sections it has been possible to formulate techniques for discriminating ceramic technological recipes. A technique for distinguishing temper and clay modification processes in pottery made from glacial materials is also developed. Local manufacture of the pottery is indicated by petrological analysis. A clear technological division of Late Neolithic and Beaker ceramics is suggested on the basis of textural characteristics. It is argued that this division represents a technological discontinuity which may also be present in southern Ireland. Possible contacts with mainland Britain are also suggested. Technological continuity is however demonstrated between late or coarseware beaker and food vessels. |
