Abstract: |
This volume, the first of three on the history and archaeology of Tameside (see also 92/1570), covers the period from the end of the last Ice Age to the Norman Conquest. Opening chapters introduce the palaeoenvironmental, archaeological and place-name evidence drawn on and discuss the region's geology, climate and vegetational reconstructions for the period c 10 000 BC--c AD 1000. The earliest evidence of human activity is Mesolithic and what is known of the occupation and economy of this period is summarised. Social and economic changes during the transition to the Neolithic are discussed, as are the developments brought about by farming between c 2500 BC--c AD 75. Next comes a section on the Romano-British period up to c AD 400, dealing with inter alia roads, native settlement and religious activity. The final chapter covers the centuries up to the Norman Conquest which saw the collapse of Roman administration followed by Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian colonisation. A conclusion summarises the volume's themes. Appendices comprise a `Gazetteer of pre-1066 sites and finds' (928), `A Late Roman coin hoard from Denton' by D C A Shotter (99) and `The place-names of Tameside' (100--14). Finally there is a `Glossary' (115--18) and list of `Sources' (119--25). |
