Abstract:
Argues that the most effective way of understanding the physical development of medieval towns is by a structured integration of the archaeological data from sites with detailed town-plan analyses. Two case-studies are examined: a detailed analysis of the plan and development of a large medieval town (Worcester) illuminates the boundaries and internal layout of the late ninth century burh; the study of a single street (Pride Hill in Shrewsbury) examines an unusually-concentrated building pattern of halls behind street frontage. Issues arising from the case-studies that demonstrate the mutually-illuminating character of town plan analysis and urban archaeology are discussed.
