Abstract:
Brings together excavated evidence, as well as documentary sources and artistic representations, from all over the Roman Empire. The book begins with chapters discussing the three types of evidence before describing each phase of the development of military hardware in detail. There is a chapter devoted to technology and production methods and one which considers the wider implications of the study of military equipment. An appendix also discusses the evidence for differentiation in the arms and armour of legionaries and auxiliary soldiers.
