Abstract:
A comprehensive overview of the work of official, national, and local archaeological organisations and field units during the year. A discussion section comprises papers from five contributors. In `Managing England's local heritage' David Baker (147-57) considers how Managing England's heritage (see 94/821) will affect archaeology at a local government level. Wide ranging issues are discussed and the importance of partnership between national and local bodies is emphasised. Discussion of Managing England's heritage continues in an essay by Frank Green (157-62): `The archaeological heritage'. PPG 16 and MAP 2 are also discussed in the context of local archaeology in the Hampshire area, and proposals for the presentation of Stonehenge are examined. Mike Griffiths (162-72) presents an overview of the development of archaeology in Britain since the 1920s in `Past, present, and future', concentrating on the CBA in general and CBA Group 4 (Yorkshire and Humberside) in particular. Marking the completion of the present generation's opportunity to excavate at `Sutton Hoo' in 1992, Philip Rahtz (172-5) reviews work at the site. `Demolishing the idea that football grounds don't count', Jason Wood (176-8) makes a plea for the conservation of football stadia. Finally, David J Breeze (179-91) presents `For love not money: the role of the amateur in British archaeology' -- the text of the 1993 Beatrice de Cardi Lecture.
