Abstract: |
Reviews the evidence for the setting, development and function of the Hadrianic frontier in Britain, in an attempt to throw fresh light on a well-studied monument. It uses a variety of sources, but in the main is based on a re-interpretation of earlier fieldwork and excavations, using the results of more recent work in these areas to elucidate and expand or re-interpret earlier discoveries. Concludes by briefly assessing Hadrianic frontier policy in Britain against the theoretical concepts of Owen Lattimore and others, and shows that it can be interpreted as a three-tiered colonialist frontier. |
