Abstract: |
The archaeological setting is described and the results of the investigations reported. The investigations were located to the south of the town, on the opposite river bank, possibly on the site of the Benedictine Nunnery of St Michael and within the former railway goods yard. A number of undated features may be related to the nunnery and it is suggested that engineering works had removed some archaeological deposits. Features and structures associated with the railway were identified, including the footings of a turntable. The importance of the site, options for further work, and the effectiveness of the investigations are also assessed. Seven appendices comprise a `Context summary' (4p), a `Pottery report' by Hilary Healey (1p), the `Environmental assessment' by Helen C M Keeley (1p), an extract from PPG 16 -- the Secretary of State's criteria for scheduling -- (1p), and details of `The archive' (1p). |
