Abstract: |
This book represents a comprehensive study of domestic buildings in London from c 1200 to the Great Fire of 1666. The spectrum of building types and their related usage is explored, drawing on physical and documentary evidence. An overview of the topography reconstructs the street pattern, defences, many religious houses, and civic buildings. The details of medieval and Tudor houses are then examined, the individual rooms, the spaces and their functions, the construction material and decoration, and finally, the internal fittings and features. A selective gazetteer of 201 sites is presented (153-232), and an Appendix: Robert Lee's house, Leadenhall Street (115), Schedule of 1607 (233-5). |
