An overview of the year's work is given in the `Director's report' by David Miles (5--7), and this is followed by departmental reports: `Consultancy Department' by George Lambrick (7--9), the `Fieldwork Department' by John Moore (10), the `Post-excavation Department' by Ellen McAdam (11), `Drawing Office' by Paul Hughes (12--13) and `Buildings archaeology' by Julian Munby & Ric Tyler (14--15). Graham Keevill (16--17) reports on work undertaken for `The Historic Royal Palaces' -- evaluations were carried out at Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London. Brian Durham & George Lambrick (18) then discuss the planning consultancy work of the `Oxford Archaeological Advisory Service'. Evaluation work at `Rewley Abbey' is reported on by Dave Wilkinson (19--21). Five medieval cob-walled buildings on St Thomas Street are described briefly in `Oxford's feet of clay?' by Tim Allen (21). `In search of the White Horse' by David Miles & Simon Palmer (22) reports on continuing fieldwork, including investigation of colluvial deposits at the base of the hill, the defences of Castle Hill fort, and associated burial mounds. Archaeological evidence put to a Public Inquiry into plans for `The Eton College Rowing Lake' is summarised by David Miles (23). Examination of the find-site of a BA bronze hoard at `Ashbury, Tower Hill' is reported by David Miles & Greg Campbell (24). `Yarnton Cassington evaluation project' by Gill Hey (25) is a report on investigation of new areas that revealed a Neo/BA landscape with several occupation sites. An overview of recent post-excavation work relating to `Anglo-Saxon cemeteries and settlement' (Oxfordshire/Wiltshire area) is given by David Jennings & Ellen McAdam (26--7). Excavations within the nave of `St Nicholas' Church, Sevenoaks' are detailed by Mike Webber (28--9). Alan Hardy (30) reports on an excavation on the `Glympton Park Estate', which revealed medieval and post-medieval buildings and evidence of IA occupation. Excavations at `Northfleet, Kent', described by Andy Mudd (31), uncovered evidence of a BA droveway and settlement (dated by 14C to late-second or early first millennium BC). Colm Moloney (32) reports on investigations in the centre of `Henley-on-Thames', which encountered Roman and medieval structures. Finally, Anne Dodd (32) reports on `Archives'. Lists of the projects, lectures and broadcasts, and publications of the Unit are included. |
