An excavation report on the hillfort evidence from the fifth century, including that of the Late Saxon burh Cadanburh, in collaboration with S J Stevenson and C R Musson. The report begins with a description of the hillfort, the excavations from 1966 to 1970, and the post-excavation work. Next follow descriptions of features of this period, including the defences and internal rock-cut features; these comprise rectangular buildings and a possible church. There is discussion of the subsequent medieval farming. Part two is a catalogue of finds. There are reports on the Late Roman coins and on the metal objects: Tania M Dickinson (66--70) describes a ring with relief decoration on both sides; `Analyses of Early Medieval metalwork from Cadbury Castle' is by P Northover (73--4), and the report on the iron was undertaken by C Saunders & Leslie Alcock (75--81), with a note on a saw blade by W H Manning (77--8). The pottery is next described, including Late Saxon pottery by S J Stevenson & Leslie Alcock (91--8), with a note on the petrology by D F Williams (92). J Price & S Cottam (99--103) describe the Late Roman and early post-Roman glass. The next section is on objects made from bone, horn, antler and teeth. Part three comprises a discussion and synthesis, beginning with a chronology of the defences and interior features. This is followed by three chapters on the Early Saxon period (fifth and sixth centuries), covering a discussion of the artefacts and activities, a comparison of the features of that period with other sites, and the position of the site within south-west Britain. The final three chapters are on Late Saxon Cadanburh, including a discussion of the defences and interior features, the coin mint and other finds, and the position of the site within Late Saxon Wessex. An epilogue summarises the major archaeological aspects of Cadbury Castle. |
