Abstract: |
A study of the overall spatial distributions and the specific place associations of the various sites that historically in England and Wales have been frequented by people designated as `mad', `lunatic' or `mentally ill'. The investigation involves an empirical reconstruction of the spaces and places of these past sites, and also attempts to understand the processes and forces that have led the people responsible for planning and managing the sites concerned to locate them in certain configurations and settings rather than in others. Michel Foucault's text on the subject (Madness and civilization) is considered. |
