A three-part paper, firstly considering the general sociological background of membership, geographical distribution patterns, some attitudes of the past and national identity, some theoretical approaches and the role of women. The second part deals with the diversity of interest represented by some of the more influential occupational groups: those giving concrete expression to the Victorian aesthetic (artists, architects, engineers); and high-status individuals (patrons, presidents, and politicians) whose efforts to raise the profile of archaeology brought the issues of ownership of and responsibility for the material remains of the past into the public domain. Mental constructs current at various times, various perceptions of what constituted history, its uses and abuses, and its changing relationship to archaeology as exemplified by the debate within the Archaeological Institute. The third part considers the dominance of the clergy, and developments from creationism to the more empirical observations of ancillary sciences, whose methodology and subject matter impinged upon the province of the antiquarian. The public dissemination of knowledge through publisher, printer, and writer members of the Institute, whose influence had waned by the turn of the twentieth century, is also considered.
