Abstract: |
Attempts to establish an alternative understanding of Early Saxon social relations; how they were produced in funerals, and how these mortuary practices may have laid the groundwork for later political hierarchies and regional identities. The approach taken borrows concepts from both anthropology and philosophy, to see if `gifts' and heirlooms may have played a role in any of these actions. The primary focus is on the use of grave goods in southeastern England between AD 450-600. |
