Abstract: |
This thesis provides a detailed analysis of how ceramic material participated within different forms of social practice at two Iron Age hillfort sites -- Uffington Castle and Segsbury Camp -- on the Berkshire Downs, Oxfordshire. The approaches used focus upon how all elements of material culture are potentially physical and cultural resources that participate in structuring social practices in the world around them. This thesis explores the use, discard, and deposition of ceramic material at Uffington and Segsbury. Ceramic material is placed within a spectrum of possible use, based upon physical characteristics and ethnographic analogy. Following this, a model of discard practices is developed based upon the mean sherd weight and a quantitative index of the surface condition of individual sherds. Finally, the deposits excavated at Uffington and Segsbury are analyzed with a model that focuses upon how ceramic material participated within the construction of deposits. This work shows, through an assessment of the quality and quantity of the ceramic sherds recovered, their context, and an understanding of the use life of different vessels, how different elements of ceramic material participated in different forms of social practices related to discard and deposition. |
