Abstract: |
Biography of Sir Cyril Fox, describing his impact on twentieth-century archaeology as a scholar, teacher, administrator, and archaeologist. The book follows Fox's interest in archaeology first as a hobby, through his entry to Cambridge at the age of 36 and subsequent career as a scholar, and considers innovation in bringing a geographical approach to the analysis of standard archaeological distribution maps, relating patterns of culture to the physical environment, and producing in his own words `economic history'. The influence of his work on both archaeological and geographical thought, and later on the development of the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, are discussed. |
