Abstract: |
Account of the lives of the people of South Uist and the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) over more than 6,000 years, as indicated by material which includes preserved Bronze Age human remains, evidence of Iron Age domestic rituals, Pictish funerary practices, and Viking longhouses. Archaeological research carried out by teams from Britain and North America over the last sixteen years has greatly increased knowledge of island life in the past and broadened understanding of the island's archaeology. The book is arranged in chapters covering chronological periods from the Neolithic to 1900, with a concluding chapter looking at the long-term perspective of tradition and change. Includes a list of sties to visit; a glossary of South Uist place-names; and an appendix, `The SEARCH project and beyond'. |
