Abstract: |
Four phases of Iron Age occupation of the hillfort were followed by a brief Roman occupation. The EIA sequence was recovered by means of one and a half sections through the ramparts and excavation of a gateway; huts, pits and other features were also examined. Period I saw the erection of the first defences, in association with Iron Age pottery. Reconstruction in Period IIA was done by people who used Southern Second B pottery and currency bars. Southern Third B elements then appeared and the strengthened defences of Period IIB may be associated with them. Major reconstruction followed in Period III (Iron C material, bronze coinage and contacts with Dobunni and Iceni). For the Roman fort a fairly detailed reconstruction of the plan of the interior is presented and a maximum life of AD 43-51 suggested. Specialist reports treat the Celtic coins, currency bars, EIA pottery, Roman coins, samian and coarse wares, small finds, as well as human and animal bones and environmental material.
