Abstract: |
Powell contributes an introductory chapter on the field study of megalithic tombs. Corcoran writes on the Cotswold-Severn group - its distribution, morphology, artefacts and problems of interpretation, stressing the complexity of development and the need for more data on structures and artefacts. The megalithic tombs of N Wales are treated by Lynch; the principal tomb here was the portal dolmen. The remainder, apart from the two passage graves, represent mixed traditions. Contents of the nine Welsh excavated tombs are set in their Neolithic context. Scott introduces the Clyde cairns of Scotland, outlining a development from "protomegaliths" (slab-built quadrangular tombs) through to the developed Clyde cairn with concave façade, akin to the Irish court cairn. Artefacts confirm the Irish connection, although the Clyde builders retained clear individuality. A detailed treatment of Kintyre shows how climate, aboriginal population, accessibility and geology affected the spread of Neolithic settlement. In conclusion, Powell sets these specific problems in their wider West European context. |
