Abstract: |
The third volume in the series Studies in Ancient History and Archaeology originated in the 1955 Summer School organised by the late F T Wainwright. Contributions (brought up to date to 1966) are by H C Bowen on the Celtic background; D J Smith on the mosaic pavements; Joan Liversidge on furniture and interior decoration; A L F Rivet on social and economic aspects; and Graham Webster on the future of villa studies. For the late Sir Ian Richmond's contribution, incomplete at the time of his death, the chapter on villa plans from his revision of Collingwood's Archaeology of Roman Britain is reproduced. For reviews, see Times Lit Suppl, 18 Dec 1969; B W Cunliffe in New Statesman, 30 Jan 1970; and S S Frere in Antiquity, 44, 1970, 149-50. |
