Abstract: |
The aim of this collection is to assemble, as fully as possible, the literary and epigraphic evidence which provides the essential chronological framework for the history of the northern frontier in Britain, from the reign of Hadrian to the abandonment under Honorius. For this purpose, only inscriptions and texts which can be reasonably closely dated have been included. For convenience, Greek literary sources have been translated into English. The collection does not attempt to illustrate the distribution or movements of units, nor does it deal with recruitment or with the development of civilian life; thus religious dedications and non-military building inscriptions are omitted, unless they have a direct relevance to the military history of the frontier area.
