Abstract: |
"The English landscape itself . . . is the richest historical record we possess" (W G Hoskins); this volume treats the record revealed by the 2800 sq miles of the West Riding of Yorkshire, especially during the last two centuries. The geological background is described, followed by a rapid sketch of prehistoric to Domesday times. The growth of villages and towns is described, with an account of the enclosure landscapes and vernacular and secular building. The remaining chapters treat the Industrial Revolution and developments since then to modern times. |
