Abstract: |
Although the documentary history of the numerous potteries of the Donyatt area has long been known, little work had been done on the wares themselves before the Donyatt Research Group was formed in 1969. Documentary research and fieldwork now proceed together to present the potters in their socio-economic context. Field walking has produced a wide range of pottery, illustrating among other things influence from Staffordshire wares. Excavations at Pottery Farm, Donyatt revealed a ?cob-walled rectangular building surrounded by soakaway ditches, one filled with large sherds of coarse wares. A much-damaged hearth and some six tons of waster sherds were found; there were also German stonewares, Staffordshire slipwares and delft wares, clay pipes and small metal finds of about 1700-1750. At Nether Stowey, excavation in advance of bypass construction produced much waster material, including kiln fabric, dating to about 1650-1750 |
