Abstract: |
This fully illustrated survey of the art of the European Iron Age from 8th century BC to 1st century AD has a short general introduction on the methodology of the study of prehistoric art, an outline prehistory of the Iron Age, and a survey of the main stylistic divisions of Iron Age art. Particular attention is paid to its cultural, religious and symbolic bases. The main text is a catalogue raisonné including details of discovery and association of each of some 300 individually illustrated pieces of sculpture, fine metalwork, pottery and coinage arranged more or less in chronological and stylistic sequence. A final section dealing with Iron Age art in the British Isles includes in addition to previously well-known pieces, new finds such as the Tal-y-Llyn hoard and the Ipswich (Belstead) torcs (see also 71/998).
