Abstract: |
NH 640453. A timber-laced drystone rampart was erected during 4th century BC to encircle part of the hill above Beauly Firth near Inverness. An outer rampart belongs to this period. Before 2nd century BC the inner rampart was fired and partly vitrified. Sampling of the interior showed occupation of pre-Roman Iron Age date and also of the Pictish period (class E pottery and a mould for a hanging-bowl escutcheon). However, a traditional connection with King Brude of the Picts seems unsubstantiated. A series of 14C dates (4th century BC to 5th AD) was obtained and animal bones are briefly reported. The inner rampart is estimated to contain about 25,000 tons of stone and 3,000 metres of timber. |
