Abstract: |
[SJ 4066]. A preliminary assessment of findings, with many half-tones and drawings. The site lies just inside the N gate of the Roman fortress, where the intervallum road, possible barracks and a rampart building were explored; after 2nd century occupation was intermittent only. Search for material of prehistoric or migration period was unrewarded. A few finds of 11th/12th century date were followed by signs of intensive occupation in 13th-15th centuries (including waste from a late 13th century metalworking shop). The post-medieval period was represented by prosperous houses (Chinese porcelain and early Staffordshire wares) and a well-room of mid-18th to early-19th century. |
