Abstract: |
Proposed redevelopment in the heart of the ancient town prompts this survey of Chesterfield's archaeological potential. Roman finds have been few, but there are economic and military reasons for expecting substantial occupation. There should also be evidence for the Saxon period. The original market dates from 11th century, with another added in 13th century as part of a ?planned expansion westwards. Full architectural survey of the threatened area is needed, and a 12-month initial programme for archaeological work has been drawn up. |
