Abstract: |
Report on the archaeological implications of redevelopment. Hereford was one of the earliest towns in the British Isles to have been formally laid out in post-Roman times. It certainly possessed a cathedral by AD 700 and then, or soon afterwards, strong defences were built. It is likely to have been an important Saxon military base against the Welsh by AD 760 and it grew in importance as a trading centre in the early Middle Ages. Several notable discoveries have been made by archaeological work on the defences; the need now is for extensive exploration in advance of redevelopment. Au(adp) |
