Abstract: |
The report presented to the CBA Conference in Norwich 1973 emphasises the problems facing the archaeological study of churches. The danger of complacency is stressed and the inadequacy of state provision is noted. The accelerating rate of redundancies in the Anglican Church under the Pastoral Measure (1968) is assessed, and the special needs of the Nonconformist places of worship are reviewed by C F Stell. P V Addyman examines the considerable potential of church excavation in Britain and abroad, Dr H L White stresses the importance of adequate graveyard recording. A modest programme of action is recommended. Appendices note the current ecclesiastical and secular legislation, list the diocesan archaeological consultants and provide a select bibliography. LASB.
