Abstract: |
Contrary to public belief, considerable evidence of Manchester's historic past is still recoverable. On the Deansgate site were recovered outlying ditches of the fort, plans of Flavian timber buildings (one a tavern just outside the fort gate) and some industrial sheds. The adjacent Roman road had eight layers of metalling representing 300 years' use. An industrial area of 2nd- 3rd century date contained hearths for preparing iron ore and reheating blooms. There was no evidence here for prehistoric occupation or for post-Roman use until 18th century. Arrangements for attracting public interest and support are outlined. |
