NG 218752. Excavations in 1895, 1936-7 and 1962-7 have produced the sequence: Flavian (probably Agricolan) fort of 0.53ha; Hadrianic fort of 1.68ha; destruction layer; Antonine I fort of 1.97ha with fine masonry, garrisoned by Coh I Nervana Germanorum (milliary, part-mounted); destruction layer; Antonine II occupation c 158, ramshackle masonry, garrison Coh II Tungrorum, anomalous pottery supplies of both samian and black-burnished ware; evacuation date unknown, about 184? In the Antonine Itinerary Birrens is the northern terminus of Iter II. Finds of coins, pottery, stone artefacts, geological and environmental evidence are catalogued.
