Abstract: |
Describes and discusses the Roman forts on both sides of the Channel, and argues that the Saxon Shore system was probably ordered by Probus and brought into commission by Carausius. It is emphasized that the system was conceived to protect the Roman NW frontier, not just Britain. Defensive tactics and the eventual breakdown of the command are also discussed. |
