Abstract:
More than 600 monuments (crosses, graveslabs and effigies) remain, notable for their profusion and variety of decoration whose main inspiration was the Romanesque style. For the 14th and 15th centuries four distinct schools are identifiable - Iona, Kintyre, Loch Awe and Loch Sween - and for the 16th century an Oronsay school. Independent carvers, on the mainland and in the islands, are treated and the abrupt end of the phenomenon at about 1550-5 noted. There follow detailed sections on the inscriptions, decorative motifs, preservation, the petrology (G H Collins), and historical notes on the Lordship of the Isles and the foundation of Oronsay Priory.
