Abstract: |
Introductory chapters on the earlier work on stone circles, the origins of stone circles and some problems are followed by a series of regional surveys covering England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. A concordance and a gazetteer are provided, together with notes on circle diameters and on the possible significance of numbers of stones. Among the topics discussed are the social implications of the communal effort involved in erecting megalithic settings, the possible astronomical significance of some of the settings, the interrelationships of various circle types, their relative and absolute dating, and the credibility of the 'megalithic yard'. |
