Abstract: |
Gives the methodology of a survey of surviving medieval rural settlements in an area (Yeovil District) where the principal threat is from piecemeal infilling. The survey, designed to evaluate archaeological potential, embraces village layout, listed and list-worthy buildings, sketch surveys of earthworks, and detailed planning recommendations. Many previously unnoticed earthworks imply village shrinkage. The academic importance of such studies lies in our ignorance of village plans, church areas etc. |
