Abstract: |
The discipline of spatial archaeology 'deals with human activities at every scale, the traces and artefacts left by them, the physical infrastructure which accommodated them, the environments that they impinged upon and the interaction between all these aspects'. The editor provides an introduction to the subject, its history and theory. Peter Dickens analyses seventy-four house-plans from Burwell (Cambs), comparing the range of plan forms that could theoretically exist with those that were actually found; he then examines which plans belong to particular historical periods and which occur over a range of periods. R Fletcher has performed micro- and semi-microstudies on settlements in Ghana and the SW USA. Robert Foley discusses space and energy and derives a method for analysing habitat value and utilization. R A Raper presents a sociological examination of land use in urban Pompeii. Ian Hodder's study is at regional (macro-) scale, using world-wide examples to demonstrate new directions in spatial analysis relevant to settlement spread, artefact distributions and associations between artefact distributions including some late British Iron Age groups. Peter Danks presents some observations on medieval and post-medieval artefact distributions at regional scale. |
