Abstract: |
Illustrated interim report on excavations in the Camery in 1978, where 3m of stratified deposits survive. Scatters of prehistoric and Roman finds are succeeded by foundations of the Anglo-Saxon cathedral, aligned with the market place. The east end continued in use as a Lady Chapel, enlarged c 1276 and demolished in 1476 for the erection of Bishop Stillington's chantry chapel, round which the medieval conduit was diverted (lead pipes, manholes and 'washout' valve of adjacent watermain surviving). The tombs of the AS bishops, now in the Cathedral, are undergoing examination and appear to include medieval holy relics inserted in 16th century. |
