Abstract:
Seeks a general explanation to account for the arrival in Atlantic Europe in Neo times of three main phenomena: passage graves, collective burial and a relatively complex system of practical astronomy and geometry. The non-diffusionist or Lamarckian view, that these features of Neo society arose independently in different areas, is considered in some detail but rejected in favour of a theory which would bring a priestly caste and its megalithic tomb-temples from the Mediterranean, and ultimately from proto-urban Mesopotamia as early as 5000 BC. This essentially Darwinian view of a 'religious revolution' takes into account the genetic studies of C D Darlington, as well as recent archaeological work on the henges of S England and at Skara Brae and the astronomical geometrical studies of Thom.
