Abstract: |
Probes the 'cumbersome and unwieldy structure' of Scottish professional archaeology and suggests some fundamental reforms to replace ad hoc decisions by planned procedures. The official bodies are discussed in turn, together with the universities, CBA, local societies and local authorities. An integrated scheme is presented whose keystone is that archaeology is a land user and therefore an interest more of local than of central government. A series of mobile archaeology units could respond flexibly to needs and publish in convenient modular form. Universities might set up vocational courses, and the Scottish group of the CBA take a more dynamic role. The principal need is to escape from redundant procedures and make much fuller contact with the public. |
