Introductory text for first/second year university students and working archaeologists on the theoretical aspects of discovering the environment of ancient human communities. Chapter 1 introduces the components of the enviromnent -climate, geology, plants, animals, space, time, man - and chapters 2 to 4 examine the evidence, and the main techniques for its recovery, of plants, animals, soils and sediments. Chapter 5 deals with natural situations such as caves, sand-dunes and peat bogs where human activity may have left traces, and Chapter 6 with the specifically archaeological remains such as earthworks, postholes and middens. |
