Abstract: |
[SZ 170908] Brings together all the known information about a site which, occupied intermittently over 10,000 years, reached its zenith during the period 100 BC to AD 50 as a major long-distance port of trade. The evidence from several excavations and many chance finds is examined against the historical and economic framework, and many new questions are posed as a result. The sudden invigoration of trade links with the Continent at about 100 BC may have been partly due to the rise of towns in central Gaul, but Caesar's activities cut off Hengistbury's long-distance contacts, reducing its sphere to that of SW Britain only. The minting of Durotrigian coins at Hengistbury remains debatable; and Roman occupation was insubstantial. Upper Palaeo finds and the BA barrow cemetery are also briefly treated. |
