Abstract: |
Some 3470 drawings of pots and a descriptive inventory provide a survey of the decorated and undecorated pottery of the pagan period. The historical summary of the evidence notes that Bede stands largely confirmed in his deductions about the settlers. Many very precise links between individual pots on either side of the Channel are seen, connections with Norway and Frisia are evident, and influence was going from England to the Continent by the 6th century. The ceramic evidence suggests a large number of settlers in 5th century, but a certain number of 4th century vessels occurring close to Roman walled towns imply deliberate official policy. Relations between Romano-British and Anglo-Saxons remain enigmatic, and the economic basis of the potting is not yet evident. |
