Abstract: |
Fresh evaluation of the monuments, taken as a group, in an area of about 13 sq m around Stonehenge, with special attention paid to modern land use, a set of recommendations made for conservation, and a note provided on subjects needing further investigation. The area contains about 400 round barrows, two cursuses, ten long barrows, a long mortuary enclosure and a causewayed camp. Thus Stonehenge was built in an area already rich in ceremonial monuments; and Durrington Walls and Woodhenge lie close by. Only fifteen of the monuments date to periods other than Neo-BA. Still needed are palaeoenvironmental studies, further field walking, and geophysical surveys. |
