Abstract: |
Hill spur first occupied c 1025; enclosure wall and rampart (with Exeter Castle-type entrance gateway and road) around large area including palace buildings of c 1060 (hall 19m x 11, chapel and camerae foundations excavated). Exchequer building (largely intact) erected across part of palace site c 1120, with contemporary rectangular keep 27m x 25 near original entrance. About 1205 the keep was surrounded by a square curtain wall with round angle towers and a stonelined moat, strengthened by a semicircular outwork. The keep itself seems to have been abandoned in favour of a nearby large building inside the curtain soon afterward. The ecclesiastical buildings in the enclosure are also described. D F R |
